About the work of psychologists in Guantánamo – Open Letter

The Brazilian Federal Council of Psychology, through its National Commission on Human Rights comes hereby to publicly state its opinion on the participation of psychologists in the supervision and organization of inquiries – in our view, nothing but torture, as that in our country during the military regime – of those who, accused of terrorism by the government of the United States of America, were imprisoned at the Guantánamo detention camp with no right to the minimum guarantees set forth in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Unfortunately, along our history some of the so-called psychological practices have collaborated – through their theories and interventions – to legitimate the classification, typification, segregation, exclusion and, therefore, the violation of the most basic Human Rights.

We do believe that we are overcoming that misleading route. We are now building a Psychology that is committed towards promoting citizenship, respecting the singularity in the pursuit for a fairer world, made of equity and fraternity.

Thus, when we are here discussing the fight against all kinds of segregation, mistreatment, cruel and degrading treatment and all kinds of torture, we consider, in all aspects, unacceptable the participation of psychologists in the supervision, advisory, organization and execution of inquiries that, in fact, are nothing but effective situations of torture.

Ultimately, we are against the existence of Guantánamo and similar sites that violate any human right. We would like to join ourselves to every one who shares that fight.
